Why acne leaves dark marks behind, how long they take to fade, and the treatments that fade them fastest at our Derby skin clinic.

Quick answer

Dark marks after acne, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, are extra pigment left behind once a spot heals. They are not scars and they do fade. To get rid of them faster: wear SPF every day, stop picking, clear any active acne, and use treatments that speed up skin renewal, such as brightening chemical peels or microneedling. Darker skin tones are more prone to these marks and need a gentler, carefully planned approach.

At our Derby clinic, the most effective treatments are brightening peels, Pigment Correct Microneedling and, for stubborn marks, the MelanoPro Pigment Peel package, chosen after a skin assessment.

Dark marks are often the part of acne that stays longest. The spot heals, but a brown or dark patch is left behind, sometimes for months. The good news is that these marks are not scars. They sit in the skin's surface layers, and with the right approach they fade.

Why acne leaves dark marks

A spot is a small area of inflammation. That inflammation sends signals to melanocytes, the cells that make pigment, and they respond by producing extra melanin. When the spot heals, the pigment stays behind as a dark mark. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH.

PIH is more common and often more intense in darker skin tones, because the skin produces pigment more readily.1 Picking or squeezing spots adds more inflammation, which is why picked spots usually leave darker marks.

How long do dark marks last?

Left alone, dark marks can take many months to fade, and marks that sit deeper in the skin can last longer.1 Sun exposure darkens them further, so marks often look worse after summer.

What helps at home

  • SPF every day. UV light switches on pigment production, so daily broad-spectrum SPF is the single most important step, all year round.
  • Hands off. Picking and squeezing create more inflammation and more marks.
  • Gentle, proven ingredients. Ingredients such as azelaic acid, niacinamide and retinoids can help fade marks over time. Introduce them slowly to avoid irritation, which can make pigment worse.
  • Calm the acne. Every new breakout can leave a new mark, so clearing active acne is part of fading marks.

Clinic treatments for dark marks in Derby

Clinic treatments speed up the renewal of pigmented surface cells, so marks fade faster and more evenly than with homecare alone.

  • Brightening peels. Our SkinBrite Chemical Peel (£80) targets pigmentation and uneven tone. The Advanced Peel, Mixology (£110) is blended to treat marks and breakouts together.
  • Pigment Correct Microneedling (£150). A lactic acid resurfacer, microneedling and red LED, to renew the skin from deeper down.
  • MelanoPro Pigment Peel package (£350). For stubborn or widespread pigmentation, three treatments with a home care kit. Read Cosmelan vs MelanoPro.
  • Acne treatment first, where needed. If you still have active breakouts, we treat them alongside your marks. See our acne treatment in Derby.

Treating dark marks in darker skin

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Are dark marks after acne scars?

No. Flat brown or dark marks are post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, extra pigment left after a spot heals. They sit on the surface and can fade. Scars change the texture of the skin, leaving dents or raised areas, and need different treatment.

How long do acne dark marks take to fade?

Without treatment, dark marks can take months to fade, and deeper marks can last longer, especially in darker skin. Daily SPF and the right treatment can speed this up considerably.

What is the fastest way to fade dark marks?

Combine three things: calm any active acne so new marks stop forming, protect your skin with SPF every day, and use treatments that speed up skin renewal, such as brightening peels or microneedling.

Why are my acne marks red, not brown?

Red or purple marks are post-inflammatory erythema, caused by small blood vessels that stay dilated after a spot heals. They are treated differently from brown marks, so it helps to have your skin assessed.

Are dark marks worse in darker skin?

Darker skin produces pigment more readily, so marks after acne are often darker and last longer. Treatment needs a careful approach, because irritation can trigger more pigmentation.

Should I treat my acne or my dark marks first?

Both, in the right order. Clearing active breakouts stops new marks forming, and we can start fading existing marks on settled areas at the same time. Your consultation decides the plan.
